ALOHA, OR (KPTV) –A suspect caught on camera stealing a $5,000 bong from a shop in Aloha returned the item after his photos were posted on social media.
The theft happened Monday at Torched Illusions on TV Highway. Because it was 4/20, the pipe and smoke shop had plenty of customers in the store.
At around 8 p.m., workers noticed an expensive bong, adorned with opals, was missing from the glass case.
They checked their surveillance cameras and found very clear video of the item being stolen. Managers posted the suspect’s images on Facebook and Instagram and told him he had until 2 a.m. to return the bong.
If he followed through, they pledged to not call police.
Five minutes before the deadline, a friend of the shoplifter’s brought the merchandise back to the store and apologized.
“We’ve had a few other theft issues, as well. We usually just post it on Facebook or Instagram and usually they get nabbed pretty quick, so it doesn’t pay to be a thief now days,” said Brandon Larsen of Torched Illusions.
Store managers kept their promise and did not call police. However, when social media shaming doesn’t work, they said crimes are promptly reported to law enforcement.
